Steeple Project Gallery

The steeple project began with the realization that I have always admired and held interest, secular and spiritual, in church steeples. One day, looking at a great steeple with bell tower, and bell, intact, I had the thought to paint it. Since, it’s grown into a great (for me) series!

Purchase note: please, if you see an image you like, head off to the blog post (the post’s title and date are under the image). There, you will see better images, details, and insight into why I was inspired to paint it. If you would like to own it, email me at offtheclockmcr@gmail.com for info and purchase choreography.

Notes: most are:

  • 8×10 mat
  • 4.5 x 6.5″ image area
  • letterpress printed text on vintage Kelsey 5×8″ press
  • paper: Rives BFK (fine printmaking paper, mould-made in France, smooth surface, 100% cotton, acid free, soft-sized, and buffered).
  • paints: watercolor and graphite (various: Danial Smith, Van Gogh, Blick, etc.)
  • archival mounting: mat, hinge tape, etc are all archival
  • frames, if selected, are black wood
  • Note: artist retains all and sole rights to images (I may, at some time in the future, create prints for sale. The purchaser and owner of the original cannot legally reproduce images of that original without written permission from the artist).

About the series: prior to painting, I wrote a little note about them … and then set it to letterpress plate. Details in the blog, beginning with Sept 3, 2021, also Nov 10, 2021 … dig into it and have fun …. 🙂

A steeple consists of a tower crowned by a spire. At its simplest, it provides a structure and a roof. In its more profound functions, it is a civic and spiritual focal point, serving as a component of both visual and audio communication. At times, it exists as an inspiring spiritual symbol. Architecturally, and from a distance, a steeple might offer the location of a church or meeting hall. It may also house a bell which could ring a tune, provide a village with the time of day, or a rally cry in times of an emergency. For the Christian, steeples serve as a reminder to look upwards in hope, reverence, and in anticipation. Structurally, the steeple may serve as a “mount” for a cross and, as a whole, a symbol of victorious faith. As noted, the steeple often serves as a home for a bell – here used to call the faithful to prayer and worship. From a relatively low perspective, looking up towards a steeple’s cross suggests a needed and freeing humility, offering an upward reach to Heaven – the human counterpart to God’s outstretched hand. The steeple brings a sense of need for closeness to God – an architectural mountain top. As faith-based prayers are sent up, the steeple points the way: True North on a spiritual compass rose.
